Everything you need to get the most out of Waldup. Questions? Email us at team@waldup.com.

Getting Started

Planning your first activity

  1. Sign in and go to waldup.com/plan
  2. Click New Activity in the top menu bar
  3. Select an existing track or upload a GPX file
  4. Choose your timing method (target time, pace, or reference track)
  5. Click Create Activity — Waldup does the rest

Your track appears on the map with an elevation profile and automatically placed waypoints. The activity sheet below shows distances, elevation gain, and estimated splits for each section.

Working with Activities

What is an activity?

An activity is a plan built on top of a GPX track. It holds your waypoints, timing settings, section notes, and target times. You can create multiple activities from the same track — for example one for your A-goal and one for your B-goal.

Sharing an activity

Activities are private by default. To share, open the activity and click the Share button — you'll get a public link anyone can view (without being able to edit). Share with crew, pacers, or race directors.

Storage limits

The number of activities you can store depends on your plan. Free accounts can store up to 5 activities. Expert accounts up to 25. Pro accounts have unlimited storage (subject to fair use).

Waypoints

Automatic placement

When you create an activity, Waldup analyses the elevation profile and places waypoints at the most meaningful points — typically where the gradient changes significantly, such as the top of a major climb or the start of a long descent.

Editing waypoints

  • Move — drag a flag on the map or click-drag on the elevation profile
  • Add — click anywhere on the elevation profile or map to add a new waypoint
  • Delete — click a waypoint flag and select Delete
  • Rename — click a waypoint to edit its label (e.g. "Col du Géant", "Crew point #2")

Every change updates the section sheet and timing estimates immediately — no need to re-calculate manually.

Timing Engine

How it works

Our trail-aware timing engine accounts for gradient when calculating split estimates. Uphill sections are slowed relative to flat pace; steep downhills are also adjusted. The result is a split plan that reflects the actual demands of your route better than a flat-pace calculator.

Timing modes

  • Target time or pace — enter a total finish time or average pace and Waldup distributes the time across sections weighted by terrain difficulty
  • Reference track — upload a previous GPX activity as a reference; Waldup scales your plan relative to how you actually performed on that route
  • Fully customisable — override any individual section time to fine-tune your race plan

Remember: All time estimates are indicative. Always factor in your current fitness, terrain conditions, weather, and personal experience when making race decisions.

Tracks & GPX

Uploading a track

Waldup accepts standard GPX files. Maximum file size depends on your plan: 5 MB (Free), 10 MB (Expert), 20 MB (Pro). If your file is larger than the limit, consider simplifying it with a tool like GPSBabel before uploading.

Creating a track

Use the Track Editor (available at waldup.com/plan/editor) to draw a new route directly on the map. Drag the route across trails to snap it to the path. Export the result as a GPX file or use it directly as the basis for a new activity.

Exporting a track

Open any track in My Tracks and click Export GPX. The file downloads immediately and is compatible with Garmin, Suunto, Wahoo, Coros, and most other GPS devices.

Maps & 3D View

Available map layers

Waldup supports several map styles depending on your plan:

  • Free — OpenStreetMap standard
  • Expert & Pro — additional layers including topographic, satellite, and specialist trail maps
  • Pro — 3D terrain view

3D terrain view

Available on Pro plans. Click the 3D button in the map controls to switch to the terrain view. Your route and waypoints remain visible in 3D. Rotate, tilt, and zoom freely to explore the terrain from any angle. Click the button again to return to the standard map.

PDF Export

Available on Expert and Pro plans. Open an activity and click Export PDF. The download contains:

  • The route map
  • The elevation profile
  • A compact section sheet with waypoints, distances, elevation, and split times
  • Any section notes you have added

The format is optimised for A4/Letter printing and designed to be folded and carried in a running vest pocket.
